Kick off your Weekend!

Move to Move Grand Opening If you love moving Move to Move looks to have lots of open space, equipment and props for you to do just that. Check out their grand opening and join them for a free class. June 16 5pm

HIGH fitness If you haven’t tried a HIGH fitness class here is your chance. HIGH Fitness class is a high energy aerobics class that will leave everyone smiling, likely for the entire weekend. They’re having a free class at Alberta Ballet with founder Amber Zenith and some other great Calgary HIGH teachers. June 17 9:30am

Summer Solstice Yoga– Celebrate the solstice a little early by heading to the top of the Calgary tower and enjoying a 90 minute yoga class with the lovely Kate Love accompanied by live harp music. $35 ticket includes admission to Calgary Tower, class and goodies. It’s hard to think of a better way to start off a Saturday.

Give Back This Weekend

This weekend is a great time to give to some charities!

Calgary Stair-a-thon If you aren’t heading to Vancouver this year but still want to have a Grouse Grind experience check out Calgary Stair-A-Thon. Participants will run up the MacHugh Bluff stairs and down the pathway with the choice of a doing a 10 lap 6.5km race,a 33 lap 21.6km race and a 65 lap 42.2 km race. All the stair ascendance is for a great cause as proceeds go to Free The Children’s Water Project. The $40 registration fee also gets you a free buff. While online registration is closed, people can register in person the day of. June 17 8am

Combat Archery If you love laser tag, paintball, archery or dodgeball then you should check out combat archery. Think dodgeball with obstacles/barriers and bows and arrows instead of balls. Held at McMahon Stadium there’s ample room to run around and $30 gets you one hour of game time, equipment and food. All proceeds are going to the Mercy Mandate Foundation and building an orphanage in Zambia so you can feel good about living out your Hunger Games or Lord of the Rings fantasy. June 17 4-9pm

Together We Sweat Head to the roof of the National on 8th for a boxing and yoga combo. Of course it wouldn’t be a rooftop party without a DJ as well. There will also be time for socializing and drinks afterwards. Proceeds go to the Alpha House and building a women’s shelter. June 17 11:30-2

Outdoor Yoga If you haven’t been to outdoor yoga in Stanley Park on Sundays and you do yoga, you need to check it out. Outdoor yoga runs from May to October, weather permitting. Class is by donation and all of the money goes towards Kiva. June 18 1-2pm

Hang Out with your Neighbours

Neighbour’s Day was created to celebrate the community spirit that emerged during the floods. This Saturday will be the 3rd annual Neighbour’s Day and almost every community is planning some sort of celebration.  With friends and social connections being a major determinant of health and also being great for emergency situations like floods, it’s a great reminder to grab some drinks and do some socializing in the neighborhood. Lots of neighbour events also have things like lawn games, sports, bouncy castles and other ways to get active. More Free Fun

Reggaetone FitFest Try out some Reggae tone for free. Classes for kids and adults along with yoga. June 17 12-5pm

Cargo Bike Races If you have a cargo bike, here is one of your few opportunities to race with it. If you don’t have a cargo bike, you have a great opportunity to try and cargo bike. June 18 12-4pm

Scavenger Hunt Take part in The Core’s free scavenger hunt. Anyone that finishes will be entered to win a $300 gift card. June 17,18

East Village Junction If you haven’t already make sure you check out East Village Junction. While there’s not that many shops, the colorful shipping containers look cool, especially when you live in a landlocked city and there’s also great music and fitness programming. Enjoy free yoga on Friday and runs on Saturday and Sunday. You can also rent a bike from Rath’s Bikes and ride alongside the river. June 15, 16,17

Rollerblade Rollerblading is cool again! Shoptask hosts a free Sunday night skate every week weather permitting. Whatever level you are you can work on your skills and go for a skate around the community. If you don’t have rollerblades they are rental options. June 18 5-6pm

YMCA In celebration of Father’s Day YMCA Calgary is holding a free access day at all of their facilities. Dads can also get a free two week trial membership. June 18

Parents

The St Patricks Island playground is definitely a favorite and it should reopen this weekend.

All Sport One Day Kids from 6-12 have the opportunity to choose from a myriad of different sports to try for free. While online registration is closed, some sites are still accepting registrations day of, contact Sport Calgary or check their social media for more details. June 17

Free Hockey Camp– If you have a hockey player sign them up for a week of free hockey camp put on by UofC’s Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre. By taking part in some great hockey instruction and typical summer camp fun  they’ll be helping with Sport Injury Prevention Research.

Laser Tag- Dads or moms play free at Laser Quest and Laser City with the purchase of a child or other admission. What better way to celebrate Father’s Day then by demolishing your kid/s at laser tag. June 18

Head out of Town

The Calgary to Banff shuttle is launching this weekend. Tickets are $10 each way and it saves you the trouble of having to find parking. If you’re missing winter it’s one of the last weeks where you’ll still get a full winter scene when you hike up some of the trails.

This is also the first week that the Highwood Pass is open to cars. It’s the highest paved road in Canada and although we prefer biking it, driving it is also great.

During the Week

Go Skateboarding Day and International Yoga Day are on Wednesday June  14. Celebrate Go Skateboarding Day by going to Shaw Millennium Park from 4-6. You can celebrate International Yoga Day with a Yoga Picnic from 12-1 courtesy of Heavens Fitness.

Sled Island starts on Wednesday. If you have a pass you get discounts to many fitness studios so plan some workouts along with your concerts. In conjunction with Sled Island there’s also a bike scavenger hunt called Ten Page Henry which people can take part in for free.
