Summer time has arrived in Calgary, and what better way to spend summer with your kids than to enjoy the various fitness options Calgary offers?
Parents are an integral source of affecting the way children feel about a healthy lifestyle and families and parents who exercise with their children are not only teaching them the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, but also reinforcing family bonds, improving communication and creating fun family traditions and memories.
Two of the most common fitness classes for families in Calgary are yoga and martial arts. Both yoga and martial arts have great benefits for anyone whether someone tries them themselves or with a family.
Yoga helps with flexibility, body awareness and balance and can also teach and change lives by introducing people to themselves and teaching them to love their body for what it can do rather than what their body looks like. Martial arts can help people become stronger and is a full-body workout which requires tremendous discipline.
In addition to these benefits, practicing yoga, martial arts or other physical activities as a family can bring about a lot of other gains. We talked to two Calgary studios in Calgary known for their family classes, Wymbin Yoga and Rim’s Taekwondo about what makes family classes unique and why they offer them.
Julia Wilson, a family and children’s yoga instructor with Wymbin Yoga Studios feels family yoga is important because of the increased connection that families can have through it stating “Many young kids, especially in the age of technology, have a really hard time effectively expressing themselves through language but can use movement to understand, channel, and express their emotions and feelings.”
Wilson also feels that family yoga helps both parents and kids learn skills for relieving stress and helps parents and kids relate to each other, both things which can help families beyond the yoga studio and for the rest of their lives.
At Master Rim’s Taekwondo, family classes are a major focus as they believe family time is important and that families value quality activities that they can participate in together. Seoungmin Rim, one of the martial arts instructor at Master Rim’s believes that “the family that kicks together, sticks together.” He also feels that families are more motivated when they are all attending together and it’s easier to keep everyone engaged and interested when the whole family is participating.
And in case you think it’s the adults providing all the benefits to a family class Rim adds that “It also works both ways because children can motivate their parents too,”. Wilson also enjoys the elements and atmosphere that kids can bring to a yoga class with their honesty, curiosity and willingness to try new things and step outside of their comfort zones.
In our time strapped world where we’re constantly communicating using digital devices, family fitness options can offer families a great opportunity for the whole family to get some face to face interaction and exercise. As well as providing the benefits of exercise and family time, family yoga and martial arts classes can provide many additional benefits which can help families in their everyday life. Whether an organized activity or not though, getting active as a family is always a worthwhile endeavour.
